When faced with a problem, we are inclined to fix it using reason. By thinking rationally, we infer the most logical course of action, which in turn provides a sense of contentment.
Have you ever noticed that when you make a rational decision, you feel good about it? You are not alone in this; Western culture admires rational thinking. Our appreciation for rationality can be traced back to the teachings of Aristotle, who argued that human good derives from acting rationally. The influence of Aristotle's philosophy on the Western world is profound, with a notable example being his establishment of higher education - an initiative that began with Plato founding the 'Academy', laying the groundwork for the 'academics' we are familiar with today.
While our ability to approach problems rationally has undoubtedly yielded numerous benefits, including technological innovations that have enhanced our physical well-being, our urge to reason has also had a destructive impact. It has conditioned us, over many generations, to suppress our feelings and resolve issues solely analytically, which, unfortunately, does little good when facing emotional difficulty.
Our proclivity for rationality is in fact harmful when struggling emotionally. By repressing our feelings, our thoughts become clouded by judgments and unproductive ideas. This is because thoughts are interrelated with feelings. As we fail to accept and process our feelings, we become burdened with pointless and harmful mental patterns. These patterns typically perpetuate self-critcism and the judgment of others, serving as a makeshift coping mechanism.
Attempting to overcome your conflicts and difficulties through psychoanalytical methods therefore offers little relief from the complex feelings that are your core burden. In order to truly improve your well-being, you will have to let go of rational thinking and start feeling your feelings.
The good news is that we have access to valuable tools that teach us how to reconnect with our feelings. In my next blog, I will shed light on specific meditations that can gradually help you feel your feelings while providing a safe space.
